Like I said, everyone has a different taste and values. The MFJ-ish look and feel makes you question the price of a new radio. They are not my first choice because of their noisy receivers and edgy RX audio. I've used a K3 a lot for contesting and own a KX3.

I don't have a lot of experience with the 6700 series rigs but the Flex 5000 is a bit too noisy for my liking and having to rely on a computer to operate the radio is a big negative in my book.Įlecraft sure has a lot of dieheart fans. Newer Flex models have a nice Maestro interface that makes the radios very attractive but be prepared to pay a lot for both the radio and the optional interface. Look at Flex type of SDR radios if you are into computers a lot and don't mind dealing with computer related issues. Kenwood makes decent entry to mid-range radios but I personally don't like their receivers as much, especially the way the way the DSP noise reduction performs on a busy band. I'm yet to find a better receiver in a radio. In my opinion, a FTDX5000 is the best DX and contesting machine, with all necessary controls at your fingertips. IMHO they are the best choice if you are an avid DX-er and like to participate in a lot of contests. Get a FTDX3000 or a FTDX5000 if you value a superb receiver with very little noise and excellent audio that you can listen to all day long without getting a headache. I personally find them confusing and not very intuitive. Icom menus will take a while to get used to. It will do very well if you like to use Digital modes a lot.

Go with an Icom 7600 or above if you like having lots of features and a fancy TV screen with a lot of information. Here are my observations and likes/dislikes: It depends on what you value the most in a radio and what you intend to use it for.Įveryone has their personal preferences when it comes to choosing and purchasing an relatively expensive radio. They suck you in then kick you in the head. The new IC-7610 sounds good, but will not be out until 3rd quarter 2017, and the price drove me away, at around 10K, from what I was told by an Icom Rep yesterday.

The IC-7300 is supposed to be a great radio.ĭecided to go with the IC-7300, RS-BA1 software and a KPA-500 Amp. No projected price, but knowing how things are, probably on the high side of $3500.00. Late summer is the projected release date in the USA. Icom is coming out with the IC-7610 with real time spectrum scope, and a Lot of other supposed new features. I am visions of granduer I guess, in that I really like the Kenwood TS-990s, (who wouldn't), and having spent several days operating one, find it easy to use, amd the incoming and outgoing audio is great. However, it is long in the tooth, and electronics being electronics, older rigs do fail once in a while. The SSB audio is great, so no issue there.
It works fine and puts out 220 watts dead key, without fail, everytime. My current primary station radio is a 31 year old Yaesu FT-1000D loaded radio.
